When we’re bombarded by stress over time, our nervous systems can become like overly sensitive alarm systems, going off at the slightest hint of trouble.

In the same way, our nervous systems can be triggered by everyday stressors like a difficult conversation with a coworker or a looming project deadline. This is usually because we’ve been through chronic stress, and we’re still carrying the effects of that in our body.

When this happens, our bodies can go into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn mode – states of high alert that makes it nearly impossible to think clearly, communicate effectively, or show up as the confident, capable leaders we know we can be.

Next, I’ll do theme and keyword research to understand your audience: Who will be reading this? What is important to them? Then I’ll create your custom questionnaire – I will never hand you a generic worksheet and expect you to know what’s most important to share with me.

The questionnaire should take you one to two hours. You’ll fill in the gaps in your story: define what you’ve accomplished, how you’ve done it, and how that will help your next organization solve its problems.

You’ll also answer 10 “personal branding” questions – these are what make you jump off the page as a real live leader instead of just a list of tasks.​

2. Deep Relaxation Training

Next, I’ll create your custom resume – I don’t use templates. I will identify the thread that runs through your background, then distill your complex story into one that is simple, clear and easy to understand with my three secrets:

1. The “career snapshot” on the top half of the first page so your reader can understand your value in 6.25 seconds

2. Detailed accomplishment stories so hiring managers can clearly see the value you’ll bring

3. Bias-proofing to position any concerns as non-issues, or even assets (sometimes unusual backgrounds help you bring a valuable skill to the table that most people in your industry don’t have)

Typical profiles are boring. They are written in flat language and are sometimes copied and pasted from the resume. Story-based LinkedIn profiles are written for the way people read online.

First, I’ll use a "hook" to get them to stop and read – usually your opinion about an industry issue, a question, or a story about how you chose your line of work.

Next, I’ll include data about your accomplishments, similar to the resume’s career snapshot.

Finally, I’ll close with a thought leadership statement. Where is your field going? I'll imply that you understand the challenges ahead and are the one to help them overcome those challenges.

When your “About” section in written this way, a recruiter can "get" you without having to scroll down and read the entire profile.
